NZ Gold Guitar Awards 2018 - What you need to know

Hokonui and NZME welcome competitors for the 45th MLT NZ Gold Guitar Awards this Queen's Birthday weekend.

Around 700 contestants will be entertaining audiences of over 5000! Those competing will chase a bigger and better prize pack this year, featuring a customised Martin guitar, and overall valued near $20,000.

Gold Guitar Auditions: FRI and SAT. All sections from 8:15am daily. Across the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium, Gore RSA, and Baptist Church. Door sales only, $8 for adults, children under 17 free. Tickets cover all venues. 

 

SUNDAY 27 MAY

Gore Country Music Club Junior/Intermediate Walkup Concert
2pm at the Longford Function Centre. Those up to 17yrs in age are encouraged to roll up and perform, backing band is available. Door sales just a gold coin, with afternoon tea included. 

 

TUESDAY 29 MAY

Motorhomers' Potluck Dinner
6:30pm at the Hokonui Pavilion, Gore A+P Showgrounds. It has become somewhat of a tradition that those staying in motorhomes during the festival get together for this event. Often contestants are among those parked up, so don't be surprised if it turns into quite a social event. For more contact Bevin Roy on 027 644 9909. 

 

WEDNESDAY 30 MAY

Gore Country Music Club Walkup Concert
7pm at the Longford Function Centre. Just roll up to perform, backing band is available. A tree planting ceremony with Gore Mayor Tracy Hicks and visiting Tamworth Queen of Country Music will be held during the interval. A courtesy coach to A+P showgrounds available for those staying in motorhomes. Door sales members $5, non-members $10. Supper is included. 

Regional Ford Country Radio Show
Join Tiny and Nathan Wednesday nights from 7pm-10pm as they dig out all their country and folk favorites for a spin. You can even request a song by calling in on 0800 465 668. Listen live on 94.8FM across Southland, or online via the iHeart Radio app (seach Hokonui Southland). 

 

THURSDAY 31 MAY

NZ Country Music Awards
7:15 doors open for drinks and nibbles, 8pm start at the SBS St James Theatre. Featuring finalists and live performances from the Recorded Music NZ Best Country Music Artist, APRA NZ Best Country Music Song, and the MLT Songwriting Awards. Special guests The Nukes. After-Party at the Thomas Green. Tickets $45+BF through www.iticket.co.nz, or from the venue. Win a VIP pass for you and 5 mates with Luke Howden Breakfast.

Jammin' at the Junction
1pm-3pm at the H+J Smith Cafe, Gore. No charge. A laid back event featuring a mash up of artists. This year including Lady Friday, Dusty Spittle, Maureen Calvert, La De Da, Jim Waddell and more. For more call Brian Kennard on 021 685 664.

Freeze Ya Bits Off Busking
School competition auditions kick off proceedings between 12pm-1pm across Gore CBD. Fierce competition between local and Invercargill schools. The top 2 progress to the finals. Find them on Facebook. Registration for the schools via Malory Hood at St Mary's School Gore. 



FRIDAY 1 JUNE

MLT Songwriting Seminar/Workshop
A seminar open to novice and experienced songwriters. Looks at the craft of songwriting, hosted by experienced tutors. This year guests The Nukes, Annah Mac, and Anthony Healey from APRA. 9am-2:30pm at Heartland Hotel Croydon. $30 payable on the day. Includes tea/coffee. 

MLT Writers Night
Following on from the above, live performances from selected artists. From 6pm at the Thomas Green, Gore. Admission free. Before the sold out Warratahs and Jenny Mitchell gig. Full dinner menu from 5pm, bookings recommended. Note - the venue will close for an hour from 8pm before The Warratahs. 


Freeze Ya Bits Off Busking
Auditions: FRI and SAT across Gore's CBD, 12noon-2pm. Registration for the first time this year online at www.gorenz.com. Great cash prizes up for grabs, $1000 for winners of the plugged and unplugged sections! Find them on Facebook

SATURDAY 2 JUNE

McDonough Gore Truck Show and Parade
A parade of big trucks to delight kids big and little. Judging at the Transport Repairs Yard on Falconer Street from 8am, registration on the day (just $10). Parade itself kicks off 2pm down Main Street for a public display at Traffers Tavern Carpark to follow. Prize giving in the Tavern at 4pm. Freeze Ya Bits Off Busking Finals and Street Party
Pretty exciting change this year - Medway Street between The Thomas Green and Howl at the Moon will play host to these finals. From 2:30pm come along for great music on the live stage, outdoor seating and heaters, BBQ, oysters, mulled wine, licenced area, the Hokonui Community Market and more. The best part, entry is FREE!

MLT NZ Gold Guitars Intermediate and Junior Finals
At the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium, from 6:30pm. Backing Band - The Southerners. Admission $38+BF for adults and $10 for children. From iTicket or the SBS St James Gore. Tune in for live coverage on Country Nation, streaming via iHeart Radio app or online here


Valley Bluegrass 
Dunedin based band playing hard-driving, rollicking bluegrass, modeled on great American bands. Featuring banjo, fiddle, guitar and upright bass. At The Thomas Green, from 7pm. Admission is free. 

 

SUNDAY 3 JUNE

Gold Guitars Senior Auditions
Just in the Gore Town and Country Club from 9am-12noon. Tickets $18 adults, kids $5. Door sales only. Tickets also cover the 40+ and 60+ finals, and the MLT showcase.  

Country Music Church Service
Everyone is welcome to the country-music themed service at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Ardwick Street. From 10am-11am. Musicians Murray and Marleen Kirk, alongside Sue and Murray Bruce will perform. The service is followed by morning tea. 

MLT NZ Gold Guitars 40+ and 60+ Finals
From 1pm in the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium. Senior audition ticket covers admission. Backing band The Southerners. 


MLT Showcase
From 3pm (aprox) at the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium. Senior audition ticket covers admission. Follows the finals above. Featuring performances from Jackie Bristow, Jeff Rea, Steve Broad, Kayla Mahon, Max McCauley, Joseph Balfie, Kelvin Cummings and more! 
 

MLT NZ Gold Guitars Senior Finals (the big one)
In the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium, 7:30pm. Backing band - Tightazz. 2017 winner Jenny Mitchell to feature. Adults $45, children $10. The overall winner receives the coveted Gold Guitar award, and a significant prize pack. Tune in for live coverage on Country Nation, streaming via iHeart Radio app or online here
