Warbirds over Wanaka

The 30th anniversary Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow is being held at Wanaka Airport this Easter! Catch three days of excitement and action – Friday (March 30th) is the practice day, while Saturday (March 31st) and Sunday (April 1st) are the full airshow days.

Congratulations to our lucky listeners who scooped a family pass with Luke Howden Breakfast!

Highlights this year include...

  • The US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon jet demonstration team displaying for the very first time at Wanaka and the first time at a civilian airshow in New Zealand.  These jets are fast and loud and will rock the stunning Wanaka mountain setting.
  • US Air Force also displaying the huge C-17 Globemaster.  This aircraft is coming from Hawaii via Japan where it’s picking up equipment for the F-16s.
  • RNZAF is also pulling out all the stops for Warbirds Over Wanaka with one of each of their aircraft type apart from the Orion.  This means the mighty B757 will display at Wanaka for the first time in 12 years.
  • All the traditional historic Warbirds will be there including a very special 13-ship Harvard mass formation flypast.  This will look impressive and sound terrific.
  • Other aircraft to watch out for are the Spitfire, Mustang, Yak, Catalina, Grumman Avenger, Avro Anson and many others including all the way from the UK the Buchon Me-109.  This aircraft was one of the aerial stars of the Oscar-nominated block buster movie from last year ‘Dunkirk’.
  • There is a huge range of ground displays to check out including large military aircraft to walk through and check out a career in aviation in the Otago Community Trust Aviation Education marquee.
  • Along with the aerial displays organisers have planned a couple of special ‘extras’ that you’ll have to be there to experience.
