Here's some of the things happening across Mid Canterbury these School Holidays...

 

  • Come on down to the Sports Hall on Tancred Street for some school holidays bouncy castle fun! Pop Up Playground features a range of castles set up, along with for the first time Gellyball shooting! Also for the first time they will be running across both weeks of school holidays – this WED-SAT, and next WED-SAT 10am-4pm. $16 all-day pass, $10 for an hour and $5 per Gelly ball canister.   • Lots of fun lined up these July school holidays at Ashburton Library. A Matariki-themed escape room will provide great family fun. Bookings (via the library website ashburtonlibrary.co.nz) are essential. The free activity will only run during the first week of the holidays, from 8-13 July.

 

  • In addition to that, there are loads of fun craft activities planned for children and teens throughout the two weeks at the Library, plus movies. You can make your own wearable dragon wings, or a dragon key chain. The dragon theme is because 2024 is Chinese Year of the Dragon, and it is 50 years since the game Dungeons and Dragons was created. The children’s holiday sessions run for an hour, from 10.30am and no booking is required. The programme features: 

    • Monday 8 July – Make your own dragon from a paper cup 
    • Wednesday 10 July – Make a polymer clay dragon key chain 
    • Friday 12 July – Make your own wearable dragon wings 
    • Friday 12 July – Watch a dragon movie at 4pm 
    • Monday 15 July – Make your own laser-cut 3D dragon 
    • Wednesday 17 July – Create dragon-inspired watercolour art 
    • Friday 19 July – Colour in a beautiful dragon picture 
    • Friday 19 July – Watch a dragon movie at 4pm 

    The teen sessions include making dragon masks and heroic quests. The programme includes: 

    • Tuesday 9 July, 2pm-5pm – Make a full dragon mask that you can wear like a helmet 
    • Thursday 11 July, 4pm-5pm – Assemble a dice tower and decorate it with decals (charge $5) 
    • Tuesday 16 July, 2pm-4pm – Make an adventure journal 
    • Thursday 18 July, 6pm – Watch a movie with us 

     

 

  • Ash and Burty also return with a mid-winter challenge – collect stamps after completing four activities on the special challenge cards available at any of the ADC facilities, and go into a draw to win a prize. 

 

  • King Cass Movement and Base Youth Ashburton present The Elements Songwriting and Recording Workshop. Registrations are now open to serious singer/songwriters who would love to workshop with rapper King Cass to create, produce, record their music. A collaborative and hands on workshop. Over the second week of the school holidays TUES 16 - THURS 18 JULY. Registrations are essential due to limited spaces to [email protected]. 021 184 0945. Age 12 - 24yrs.   • Visit the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum to take part in their holiday activities. In week one, join for some miniature canvas painting! Let your imagination soar as you paint your own masterpiece. It's $2 to take part in this activity including all resources, and it will be running from 10am - 4pm between 06 July and 13 July. Then across week two, they will be doing sign etching inspired by the new exhibition Signs Past. Design a personalised sign inspired by the art of etching. This activity is free, and will be running from 10am - 4pm between 14 July and 21 July. Drop in anytime to take part, and stay as long as you like!

 

 

  • The team at Virtual and Retro on Tancred Street have a School Holiday special - 1-3 headsets for $35pp per hour, or 4+ headsets for just $30 per hour. Plus a new Esport tournament. E-sports is competitive video gaming organised just like regular sports, with teams competing against each other in tournaments - sometimes for sweet cash prizes. Just like in traditional sports you need to build skills and foster talent - but you never get muddy or have to stand out in the rain!   • Looking for school holiday ideas? Lushington's on Archibald St has a Kids Scavenger Hunt running. Receive a free fluffy or kids hot chocolate! Get your hunt forms from the cafe. Running from 6th -21st of July.
